Claire's close to the edge

Claire Peacock

Corrie's Claire Peacock has gone through some tough times in her short life. After suffering a post-natal depression so severe she tried to push her newborn son Freddie under the wheels of a car, she then faced fresh trauma when the tot was kidnapped by her so-called friend Casey.

But all this pales into insignificance when Claire tries to throw herself off a hospital roof after losing her unborn baby. The mum-of-two nearly dies from a blood clot on her lungs – but, when she discovers the illness has claimed the life of her baby, she sinks into a deep depression.

As she climbs onto the hospital roof and teeters on the edge, husband Ashley races to the scene and begs her not to jump, saying: "What would the boys and me do without you?” Claire replies. "Do you see everybody out there, Ashley? They’re normal people getting on with their lives. People being born, people bringing up kids, eating their breakfast and just happily doing everyday things. Why can’t I be normal, Ashley? Why I can’t I be normal?" Gulp.

Thankfully, Ashley manages to grab Claire and drag her back from the edge – just as a police car screeches to a halt in the street below. As the boys in blue arrive on the rooftop, Claire pleads with Ashley: "Please don’t let them section me, Ashley. Please don’t let them take me away." Double gulp. You can see the heart-rending episode later this summer.
